Get Right! with John Orpheus
GET RIGHT! The title track, first single and first video from the new John Orpheus EP
I played drums / synth bass / and co wrote this bad boy for John Orpheus with Mike Schlosser and now it’s in the world! I had to choose if I wanted to play drums or bass for the video. As luck would have it Da-Rell Clifton (who is both a very pretty man and the funkiest of drummers) was down to play drums for the video shoot and so this is also the first time I got to show up in a music video NOT playing drums! It was a great day with lovely people. So that’s the short story, and maybe that’s all you need. If so, enjoy! Long story to follow, and full credits below that …
The Long Story:
Making music is about stories, that’s what I find most compelling. A few summers ago John, Mike and Myself decided to make a record. We were going to write it and track it in the studio in 2 weeks. Enter Daphne Copper who welcomed us warmly over at Copper Sound here in Guelph and created the perfect sandbox for us to tug at whatever threads may appear. Thanks Daph! Day 1. Minute 1. It’s just Daph and I. We figure we might as well get some drum sounds before the other guys show up so we can “get right to work” when they arrive. We pulled a tempo out of the air, rolled a click track and I laid into this groove that had been rolling around my mind during my bike ride to the studio. Daphne and I listened to the playback to audition the sounds we were getting, and shared a look that said “this might be something”. So I went back in, put some bass on it and by the time the guys showed up we already had a song off and running. There is a point of this little detour. You may notice at the end of this video, during the out take scene, that I have a bit of a dumbfounded look of amazement / glee / disbelief on my face. At that moment, and I’m so glad it was captured on film, at that moment my thoughts drifted back to that first minute of that first day and it dawned on me that all this … this wonderful day we had had with our friends, all the exceptionally talented folks behind cameras, with artistic vision and crazy ideas, this great little community of support and encouragement … the whole series of events that had lead to this point, and beyond, was set into motion by a tempo and a click track. What a wild ride this life in music can be.
